Frequently Asked Questions About Psychiatry Services

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. They can provide assessments, develop treatment plans, and prescribe medication when appropriate. Therapists focus on talk therapy and emotional support. Many individuals benefit from a combination of therapy and psychiatric care.

Yes. A referral from a pediatrician, family doctor or nurse practitioner is required for all psychiatric consultations with our psychiatrists, as these services are covered under OHIP. Referrals remain valid for two years and allow for consultation and, if needed, a repeat assessment within that time.

Our psychiatrists provide a consultation service only.

Following the assessment, detailed recommendations are sent to the referring provider, who remains responsible for ongoing care and prescription management.

A psychiatric assessment is a comprehensive, consultation-based evaluation focused on understanding your concerns, clarifying diagnosis, and providing evidence-based treatment recommendations.

During the appointment, the psychiatrist will review your current symptoms, mental health history, medical history, and any prior assessments or treatments. This may include discussion of mood, anxiety, attention, sleep, functioning, and relevant life context. When appropriate, collateral information (e.g., from family members or previous reports) may also be considered.

Following the assessment, a detailed consultation report is prepared outlining diagnostic impressions and individualized treatment recommendations, which may include therapy options, medication guidance, and next steps for care. This report is shared with your referring provider, who remains responsible for ongoing management and prescriptions.

In some cases, a follow-up or repeat assessment may be recommended to further clarify diagnosis or review response to treatment.

ADHD care at Whole Heart Mental Health & Wellness is provided through a structured, team-based approach, with services tailored by age and clinical need.

For children and youth (13 years and under), ADHD assessment and ongoing medication management are provided by Dr. Deborah Lipszyc through referral. This includes comprehensive assessment, diagnostic clarification, and longitudinal treatment, including medication monitoring where appropriate.

For adolescents and young adults (up to age 22), ADHD may be assessed as part of a psychiatric consultation with our child and adolescent psychiatrists (referral required). As this is a consultative service, recommendations are provided to the referring provider, who continues ongoing care. Repeat consultation may be arranged if clinically indicated.

For adults, ADHD assessment and treatment are offered through our Nurse Practitioners as a private, fee-based service. This includes comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing medication management and monitoring.

Medication is not always necessary. During a consultation, the clinician will discuss different treatment options and work collaboratively with you to determine what approach is most appropriate. Some individuals benefit from medication, while others may focus on therapy or lifestyle strategies.

Yes, psychiatric consultations with a physician psychiatrist are covered by OHIP with a referral from your doctor.

Wait times for psychiatric consultation can vary. For faster access, nurse practitioner services may be available with shorter wait times and direct booking. This is fee for service.
